S'appuyant sur sa connaissance intime de l'oeuvre et sa compréhension instinctive de l'homme qu'était son père, l'auteur articule, dans des textes sensibles, percutants et pleins d'humour, les différentes périodes et l'évolution des moyens - couleurs, formats, mises en contexte... - par lesquelles Mark Rothko a cheminé dans sa quête incessante d'un partage avec le spectateur.
  Ce livre permet également de comprendre la cohérence artistique et intellectuelle de l'oeuvre, depuis les peintures figuratives précédant le passage à l'abstraction jusqu'aux toiles dites «classiques» des années 1950 et 1960, devenues iconiques.
