«Plastically, and it's essential, Atlan was able not only to provoke the emergence of a world of forms, but to render visible the very emergence itself. He came to know the value of slowness, and it's in this that he can rightly be called "classical". The emergence isn't decomposed, it is suspended to the forms it brings with it, and these forms in turn seem to give the emergence poise, while making for the balance of the painting. The dancing movement stops, and a dark line embraces a colour. Night and silence come back into their own : "I'm no figurative painter, at least up till now, because the forms I feel viscerally (without that kind of feeling, there's no painting), are ones that project the spectator (the human being, myself) into unknown territory, making him aware that he is surrounded, on the inside and on the outside, by terrible, sometimes hostile, forces - that are mysterious and yet strangely familiar." Jacques Polieri, en 1963, est un jeune metteur en scène très à la mode. Mais ce qui le différencie de certains réalisateurs reconnus alors, c'est un propos éminemment ambitieux et une vision de l'à-venir étonnante. Il prévoit, vingt ans à l'avance, la fin du théâtre - dans sa forme traditionnelle, la banalisation du cinéma, et l'extraordinaire développement de la télévision, de la vidéo et des moyens électroniques.
Il publie Scénographie qui fait le bilan et, la synthèse de ces disciplines.
Le livre obtient un succès considérable. En France, où le grand historien du cinéma Georges Sadoul s'enthousiasme et lui consacre le titre et des pages entières des Lettres Françaises. L'ouvrage est traduit dans les universités américaines. Il devient la bible des promoteurs des Expositions mondiales de New York en 1965, de Montréal en 1967 et Osaka en 1970.
La première édition, tirée à 10 000 exemplaires est épuisée en quelques mois. Scénographie qui, à la suite, forma plusieurs générations d'hommes de l'art, devient un classique introuvable. Les dernières promotions n'ont pu et ne peuvent le consulter.
Revu, corrigé et augmenté, l'ouvrage est réédité aujourd'hui par Jean-Michel Place. L'ensemble est précédé d'illustrations couleurs et d'un texte récent, inédit de Jacques Polieri, qui rappelle par ailleurs les dernières réalisations de ce grand créateur, de la mise en scène moderne. -
