In 1972, Priscilla E. Muller, a researcher and curator at the prestigious US institution devoted to the study and preservation of Spanish art, The Hispanic Society of America, based in New York, published her masterpiece, "Jewels in Spain: 1500-1800", with the Societys backing. This book is a complete and perfectly documented treatise on the jewellery items created for the Spanish monarchies of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as focusing on the jewellery creators themselves and the patrons who commissioned the pieces.
In effect, this book, which features numerous pictures, has remained an essential work of reference for the study of Spanish jewellery during the reign of the Hapsburg and Bourbon Dynasties, extending as far as the rule of Charles IV. However, in spite of its importance, the work has only been published in English up until now. Forty years have passed since Dr. Muller completed the book and, in all this time, her monographic work has lost none of its relevance, continuing to be an excellent basic guide for the study of a fundamental aspect of Spanish art. However, it is quite impossible to find "Jewels in Spain: 1500-1800" today. For this reason, Ediciones El Viso has undertaken the task of carefully republishing the work, as revised and updated by the author, featuring new pictures based on photographs taken expressly for the purpose at hand and reproduced in full colour. Furthermore, this time the work will not only be produced in the English language, but also in Spanish.
As the passing of time has amply demonstrated, Priscilla E. Mullers work is an example of meticulous research within the history of art, one that has been conscientiously produced, extremely well documented and carefully revised. Founded on an extensive knowledge of Spanish art, of the corresponding historical and cultural context in which the jewellery-artisans carried out their work and the trading conditions for works of art, this book focuses on some of the most beautiful items ever created during the years of splendour enjoyed by the Spanish monarchy.

The exhibition on the collection of royal bound volumes belonging to Spain's National Heritage, Great Bindings in the Royal Collections, will bring together the extraordinary treasure trove of bound volumes preserved at the Royal Palace Library and in the Libraries of the Monasteries of El Escorial, Las Huelgas, Las Descalzas and La Encarnación for the very first time, works that make up one of the world's finest collections with regard to the art of binding.
These royal bound volumes reflect the endeavours of the corresponding craftsmen to achieve an ideal in which technical expertise is combined with artistic splendour. As truly exclusive creations, these works can be enjoyed as much for their appeal to the touch as for the visual delights they offer. Nevertheless, their cultural significance goes beyond the realm of luxury. Their meaning resides in their ceremonial and representative function, in their endeavour to achieve the category required for an institutional work, in their ability to endow cultural creation with a sense of excellence and long-lasting appeal, and in their desire to pay homage to the monarch in whose hands they were destined to rest. However, in Court, in the lounges of the aristocracy and in erudite circles, these bound volumes also sought to generate that special aura that identifies a true cultural event, one that is forever present throughout the march of History.
This exhibition, which is due to take place in April 2012, will bring together two hundred and fifty bound volumes selected from Spain's National Heritage collections, making up an exceptional and unrepeatable exhibition of these marvellous works of art. These are works that were created for the monarch's own use, beginning in the days of Charles V and Philip II, offering us a marvellous insight into the Royal Libraries of the House of Hapsburg and the House of Bourbon. We also come across items from a number of extraordinary complete collections that were treasured by conspicuous patrons and ending up by enriching the King's library, thus endowing the Crown with the enormous intellectual prestige enjoyed by their owners for having gathered together such works.
In Royal Hands, the book that is due to be published to mark the staging of the exhibition will bring together this catalogue of works, whose details can be appreciated through a series of photographs taken specially for the occasion. Various international experts have been asked to contribute to the publication. These essays correspond to an ambitious academic programme that has been designed for this monographic publication by the curator of the exhibition, Maria Luisa López-Vidriero, the Head of the Royal Library, with a view to providing a theoretical reflection regarding the event, as well as a material description that might serve as a basis for a constructive debate concerning the significance and purpose of royal binding within the cultural history of Europe. This opportunity to bring together this excellent series of bound creations in a carefully-produced edition, complemented by the expert analysis of a prestigious group of experts, will give rise to a fundamental publication regarding the art of binding, its history and its cultural significance.

Ce livre est bien plus qu'un guide: c'est la combinaison parfaite entre art et histoire et elle renvoie à une exposition novatrice et à une médiation largement inspirée par sa conception, confrontant réalité et "réalité mixte". Il permet de comprendre, de manière synthétique et claire, l'histoire du Mont Saint-Michel au fil des siècles, ses transformations et ses paris. Le Mont Saint-Michel, construit avec ferveur depuis le Xe siècle, est une "frontière" entre la Normandie et la Bretagne, entre le catholicisme et le protestantisme, entre la France et l'Angleterre, entre la terre et le ciel.
Pour la beauté méticuleuse du spectaculaire "modèle" en relief offert au Roi Soleil en 1709 et conservé au Musée des Plans et Reliefs, des documents rares, des plans, des photos du site et des vues numériques qui racontent et explorent son histoire sont ajoutés.

Nuit et jour, durant la période de confinement, Gaby Wagner a photographié Venise. Elle a marché dans les ruelles étroites de la Sérénissime, passé les ponts, sillonné les places... avec pour seul compagnon l'écho de ses pas. Venice in silence restera le témoignage d'une rencontre troublante avec le temps, où la beauté parait lutter sans cesse, non sans un certain mystère, avec un sentiment d'abandon.
Au fil des pages, les spectaculaires photographies de Gaby Wagner révèlent une Venise déserte et silencieuse : les gondoles à l'amarre ont perdu leurs gondoliers et leurs chants, les palais se mirent dans les eaux endormies au point qu'on peine à les distinguer de leurs reflets, créant de vertigineux effets de symétrie..., la Place Saint-Marc semble démunie, le Rialto sans ses échoppes parait futile... et le Pont des Soupirs fait figure d'orphelin... Devant cette Venise insolite, réduite à un simple et splendide décor, certains ressentiront un sentiment de trouble, d'autres apprécieront la majesté des palais et des places immobiles et silencieuses. Délivrée de ses touristes, la Sérénissime serait-elle enfin sereine ? Mais est-ce la vraie Venise ? Celle qui depuis le XVIIIème siècle est inséparable de son activité humaine.

Forever Africa retrace l'aventure humaine et artistique de Viviana Vammalle, psychologue de profession, photographe par passion, partie à la rencontre de peuples d'Afrique subsaharienne qui, à moins d'une prise de conscience urgente, paraissent inexorablement voués à une forme d'extinction culturelle, condamnés par l'occidentalisation qui s'étend partout en Afrique, entraînant peu à peu l'abandon de leurs traditions ancestrales.
Ce livre, autant que le livre d'art qui nous séduit au premier regard, constitue un témoignage bouleversant sur ces tribus en danger.
Il n'a pu être réalisé que grâce à la confiance patiemment tissée par des années d'amitié, sur le terrain, dans le respect de leurs coutumes et de leur intimité.
C'est à ce titre que Viviana Vammalle et son amie Ana María de La Bruyère, conceptrice artistique de l'ouvrage et son initiatrice, ont reçu toutes deux le titre d'Ambassadeur Honoraire des Nations Unies pour avoir documenté le mode de vie et les coutumes de ces groupes ethniques et tout particulièrement au Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Éthiopie et Kenya.
Très sensible à ce projet, Son Altesse Royale La Reine Diambi Kabatusuila du Congo soutient activement cet ouvrage, en ayant accepté notamment de participer à sa présentation à la librairie du musée du Quai Branly le 21 octobre 2021 ainsi qu'à sa promotion et aux divers événements liés.
